For many, the new year starts in August – not January. Back to school season brings about new routines that we settle into for the upcoming months. Getting your home back on track before it’s back to school makes the transition a lot less stressful. Here are our top tips for decluttering and organizing your home in a snap.
Go through the room’s closets, wardrobes, drawers and bins. What hasn’t been used in 6 months or more should be a strong donation contender, unless it’s a seasonal item. Seasonal items should find a new home in a garage, attic or shed to free up precious real estate inside the home. Remove excess furniture, décor, pillows, blankets and curtains – these make a space feel cramped and less functional. Last, do a quick dusting of surfaces, under furniture and along wall décor as well as a quick vacuum or sweep to get the main debris. Donation boxes should be taken straight to the garage or your car. Toss the garbage and put away the items in your basket that belong in other rooms before you head to bed. Donate or toss Tupperware that doesn’t match or has reached its life span. Liberate the catch-all drawer from the packets of soy sauce, receipts, coins and misfit toys. Dive into the fridge tossing empty containers, expired items and anything that’s got more chance of growing mold than getting used. Give a new lease on life to your unused appliances, mismatched dishes, or pots and pans by donating them. Remove items from countertops and shelves that don’t serve any real purpose and clear the pantry of unwanted food items. Last, do a quick wipe down of surfaces and counters and sweep up floor debris.
